The police operation was completed today (Monday) with the arrest of the victim’s brother-in-law, Rohit Bhati (28), and father-in-law, Satveer Bhati (55).

The victim’s father, Bhikahri Singh Payla, has repeatedly stated that his daughter was tortured for years over dowry demands, including Rs 36 lakh and expensive cars, and has publicly demanded the “hanging” of the accused.

However, police investigations have also focused on an argument that reportedly sparked the final, fatal assault. According to Kasna SHO Dharmendra Shukla, a fresh argument began when Nikki insisted on reopening a beauty parlour she ran with her sister and continued to make Instagram reels, against her husband’s wishes. Police confirmed that domestic violence and Vipin’s alleged contacts with other women were major sources of conflict, though the FIR is primarily based on dowry harassment leading to murder.

In a video statement made from his hospital bed after being shot by police, the main accused, Vipin Bhati, displayed an apparent lack of remorse, claiming, “I have no remorse. I haven’t killed her. She died on her own. Husband and wife often have fights, it is very common.”

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, demanding a detailed action report from the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police and emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of the victim’s family and witnesses.
