Saket Prakash Pandey, the Inspector General of Police for the Rewa Zone, pointed out that the weekend rush has been the main culprit behind the traffic jams. He’s optimistic that things will improve in the coming days, especially since cars are only allowed to move with the cooperation of the Prayagraj government.
Reports indicate that some vehicles have been stuck for an exhausting 48 hours. One frustrated traveler shared, “It takes us almost 10-12 hours just to cover 50 kilometers.”
The roads from Varanasi, Lucknow, and Kanpur to Prayagraj are jam-packed, with congestion stretching up to 25 kilometers. Even in the city itself, where the Kumbh mass event is taking place, there’s a seven-kilometer traffic jam. Kuldeep Singh, the additional deputy commissioner of police for traffic, explained that the long wait times are due to the sheer number of cars trying to reach the mela site. “There are just so many cars out here. Travelers are doing everything they can to get as close as possible to the Maha Kumbh Mela area,” he said, highlighting the frustration many are feeling.
Akhilesh Yadav, a leader from the Samajwadi Party, has criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for the traffic woes in Prayagraj, suggesting that it has also contributed to shortages of basic amenities in the city. It’s a tough situation for everyone involved, and many are hoping for a speedy resolution.
