Virat Kohli smashed his 71st international century and his maiden T20I ton during India’s Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 match against Afghanistan on Thursday in Dubai. His unbeaten 61-ball 122 was the highest score. The modern-day batting great Virat Kohli has finally smashed a century in international after 1020 days. This is his 71st international century and now he has joint-second-most centuries in the history of the game.
Kohli who scored his last century on 23rd November 2019 against Bangladesh brought up a welcome hundred against Afghanistan in the dead rubber clash in the Asia Cup 2022. That, however, did not stop the fans from celebrating Kohli’s special three-figure knock that also happened to be his maiden T20I ton.
The former Indian skipper achieved the feat in just 53 deliveries.
Kohli took 522 innings to complete the 71 centuries milestone and he has become the fastest player in the history of the game to achieve this feat. Legendary batters Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting had smashed their 71st international century in 523 and 652 innings respectively.
“I feel very blessed, very grateful right now. The last 2-2.5 years have taught me a lot. I am going to turn 34 this November. These celebrations are all from the past. I’ve put a lot of things in perspective. Actually, I was a bit shocked because this was the format I least expected a century to come in anytime soon. But look, it’s all god’s blessing. I’ve been working hard. It was a moment that was very special for me and for the team as well,” Kohli said at the innings break.
Kohli reached his hundred with a six off Fazalhaq Farooqi off the 53rd delivery of his innings. The 33-year-old is currently the leading run-scorer in the Asia Cup, with 276 runs in five innings. Kohli remained unbeaten for 122* in 61 deliveries as his century propelled India to a handsome total of 212/2 against Afghanistan on Thursday.
