Mangal Pandey Birth Anniversary: Facts about the fearless freedom fighter, hero of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857

Our beloved India got freedom on 15th August 1947, but we fought for years to get freedom. The bugle was first blown against the British rule in 1857 and it was done by Mangal Pandey born in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. Mangal Pandey played an important role in India’s first freedom struggle in 1857.

Who was Mangal Pandey?

Mangal Pandey was born on 19 July 1827 in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. His village name is Nagwa and he was born in a Brahmin family. Mangal Pandey’s father’s name was Diwakar Pandey. Mangal Pandey was selected in the East India Company’s army at the age of just 22. He joined the 34 Battalion of the Bengal Native Infantry. A large number of Brahmins were recruited in this battalion, due to which they were selected.

Why did Mangal Pandey become famous?

Freedom fighter Mangal Pandey played an important role in India’s First War of Independence in 1857. He had mutinied against his own battalion. Mangal Pandey refused to open the greased cartridge, due to which he was arrested and hanged on 08 April 1857. This rebellion made him famous and fueled the flame of freedom. For this reason, he was called a freedom fighter.

What was the Revolt of 1857?

The British government had given this battalion an Enfield rifle, whose target was accurate. The process of filling bullets in this gun was very old. To fill the bullet in it, the cartridge had to be opened with the teeth and Mangal Pandey had opposed it, because such a thing had spread that the meat of cow and pig was being used in this cartridge.

The English government did not like Mangal Pandey’s rebellion and he was arrested. Mangal Pandey was hanged on 08 April 1857, 10 days before the scheduled date, because it was feared that the situation might worsen with his hanging. Mangal Pandey also asked his other colleagues to oppose it and it happened.

What was the result of the Revolt of 1857?

The martyrdom of Mangal Pandey did not go in vain. His death gave a clear message to the British rule that the coming period is going to be difficult. A month after the execution of Mangal Pandey, on 10 May 1857, a rebellion broke out in the cantonment of Meerut under the leadership of Kotwal Dhan Singh Gurjar. After this, similar news started coming out from many other places as well.
